Dr. Sally Newman

Sally Newman

The Newman Award for International Intergenerational Student Projects

The Newman Award was established by Dr. Sally Newman, an emerita researcher from Pitt’s University Center for Social and Urban Research (UCSUR) and faculty of the School of Education.

Dr. Newman was founder and executive director of Generations Together, a UCSUR intergenerational program for 25 years. During her tenure, Dr. Newman developed and conducted intergenerational workshops, training institute units, and academic courses at this university and other institutions in the U.S. and abroad. She is also the founding co-chair of the International Consortium of Intergenerational Programs (ICIP), an international networking and support organization. Dr. Newman is the founding editor of the Journal of Intergenerational Relationships (JIR), an international journal published by Haworth Press. She has collaborated with colleagues in the U.S. and abroad on research, articles and books on intergenerational topics.

The Newman scholarship partially supports the expenses incurred by students who are involved in an academic project with international intergenerational components. Intergenerational projects involve the participation of a community’s older and younger persons in planned, ongoing interactions designed to address a social issue confronting the community. These projects directly impact the health, education or overall quality of life of the community’s young and old.
