Friday, November 4, 2011 at 6 PM: Pittsburgh Premier BEREZA KARTUZKA by a multi award-winning filmmaker Yurij Luhovy followed by a reception sponsored by the Pierogies Plus.
Award-winning documentary tells the story of the infamous Polish concentration camp in which thousands of Ukrainian patriots were imprisoned between 1934 and 1939.
Pavia Fleischer’s documentary chronicles a road trip by the filmmaker and Eugene Hutz, frontman and lead singer of New York's gypsy punk bandGogol Bordello, through Eugene’s home country, Ukraine. Hutz's purpose is to rediscover his Romani gypsy roots and learn the secrets of gypsy music. Fleischer’s aim is to rediscover a forgotten romance. The result is a story of two people traveling together on two very different yet convergent courses.
Celebrating its 30th year, the festival is one of the most eagerly awaited events in Pittsburgh, featuring independent American cinema, new documentaries and critically-acclaimed international films. There are visiting filmmakers, informal discussions, live music, parties and more. The venues are the Harris Theater, the Melwood Screening Room, and the Regent Square Theater.
On November 4 three films open at three separate locations, with a birthday party to follow at Pittsburgh Filmmakers' Oakland location, 477 Melwood Ave.
