Student International Relations Society Presents: Dr. Strangelove. A film by Stanley Kubrick set in 1960s amid the Cold War after the Cuban Missile Crisis.
The Film Studies Program and the Asian Studies Center present a screening of Sthaniya Sambaad / Spring in the Colony directed by Arjun Gourisaria and Moinak Biswas (India (Bengali), 2009) and winner of the Best Feature Film Award at the New York Indian Film Festival in 2011. Filmmaker Moinak Biswas will be present to introduce the film.

The festival will introduce local residents to unique viewpoints and will showcase films from Ukraine, USA, Canada and Western Europe with Ukrainian content. Many of the film screenings will also feature a Ukrainian cuisine reception and appearances by the film directors and/or experts/professors from the local Universities to provide an interactive environment and all-encompassing experience.
Seven films and documentaries will be presented at the State-of-the art Baverso Theater. Foreign language films are subtitled in English.

October 7 - Genocide Revealed
Directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet and starred by Audrey Tautou, “Amélie” tells a story about “an innocent and naive girl in Paris, with her own sense of justice, decides to help those around her and along the way, discovers love”. This French-style movie reveals the home of romance as a nest for fairy-tales. French pastries and coffee will be provided during the movie. Come and join us in a poetic trip to the most romantic city in the world.
Produced by Hollywood, “Memories of a Geisha” combined multi-cultural flavors through its international cast, including China, Japan and America, etc. In this novel-adapted movie, Nitta Sayuri(starred by Ziyi Zhang) reveals how she transcended her fishing-village roots and became one of Japan's most celebrated geisha in Japan. Asian-flavored snacks and beverage will be provided during the event and no registration is required. Come and join us into a dramatic trip to the unknown side of Japan around World War II.
“Prince among Slaves”, a 60-minute PBS film, tells the true story of an African prince in 18th century, Abdul Rahman, who endured slavery in Mississippi and was eventually released and had to return to Africa. During the movie night, African-flavored snacks and beverage will be provided. This is the opening for “International Flavor” event which will last for a week. No registration is required. Just show up and taste the sweaty wind of Mississippi and wildness of African continent.
Madhyama Prasaran and Scientific Research Foundation has produced a 20 minute short film on child sexual abuse. 'Meryll' directed by Raghav Bhotika is the story of a girl who is going through an extremely sensitive period in her life, so much so that it can either destroy or cure her for life. Walking on a thin line between sanity and reality we see just how aloof Meryll is from the outside world and how little her own family knows her. During this journey, Meryll sees some light at the end of the tunnel, but she will have to put her past daemons aside.
Join us for a special colloquium where University of Pittsburgh graduate students will interrogate and challenge the definitions of "national" and "transnational" through an investigation of American, German, Russian, Israeli, Palestinian, Mexican, South Korean, and Japanese screen cultures.
