Dr. Mohammed Bamyeh, Professor of Sociology, University of Pittsburgh and Dr. Riham Bahi, Assistant Professor at American University in Cairo will moderate a discussion with Pitt and American University in Cairo students on US Foreign Policies and the Middle East/Northern Africa. The Middle East, Africa and the US: What are the major issues, shared views and diverse perspectives? How does the current crisis in Syria and Egypt impact US citizens? How is US foreign policy viewed in terms of African development and revolutions in the Arab world? Is Palestine a forgotten issue?

This talk will work through a number of issues that have been tackled by the revolutionaries in the Arab world. Primarily, the analysis of the geopolitical and grassroots forces at work in advancing and countering the revolutions, mainly in Syria but also in Egypt. The politics of international intervention will figure in prominently as it is a question that remains on the table in both policy and academic circles.

Pitt students will discuss the impacts of the recent global economic crisis and how the economy affects security decision making with peers at American University of Cairo (AUC). The Egyptian students are enrolled in an interdisciplinary global issues course at AUC.

Boren Awards for International Study Information Session

Available for both undergraduates and graduate students, Boren Awards support the study of less-commonly-taught languages through study abroad. Applicants must demonstrate how their proposal and future goals are connected to a broad understanding of national security, and award winners must agree to a one-year government service requirement. Changing Perspectives in Development Practices: Overcoming Female Genital Mutilation in Egypt

Dina El Naggar is a Senior Communications Officer at the World Bank Integrity Vice Presidency. The World Bank Group's integrity mission is designed to detect, investigate, sanction and prevent fraud and corruption in Bank-financed projects. Prior to joining the World Bank, she was a UNDP project manager managing projects in the environment and child rights sectors where she designed and managed the implementation of Egypt's national campaign against female genital mutilation and the social marketing campaign 'Think Twice' targeting hazardous behavior among adolescents.

Avner Gvaryahu is from Breaking the Silence, an organization of Israeli military veterans whose goal is to expose the Israeli public to the reality of everyday life in the Occupied Territories.
Prof. Rachel Kutz-Flamenbaum is a professor in Pitt's Department of Sociology. She is a social movement scholar who will provide background on Human Rights and Peace Movements in Israel and a discussion of the Israeli Human Rights organization, Machsom (Checkpoint) Watch.
