From Archive to History: Maoist Revolution and New China at the Grassroots

The formal establishment of the People’s Republic of China in Beijing on October 10, 1949 heralded the arrival of what the Chinese Communist Party proudly called “New China.” But what did the establishment of New China look like at the grassroots level? This talk moves the focus of inquiry away from Beijing and down to Poyang, an overwhelmingly rural county far from centers of Maoist power. Attendees at this 2023 PACIE annual conference session will be introduced to our multidisciplinary simulation models and will hear the teacher perspective on simulations, including how to prepare students and the value of participation. They will learn how the global approach in conducting these simulations facilitates interdisciplinary perspectives. Presenters will share free educational resources and opportunities from the University of Pittsburgh’s six National Resource Centers, spanning many world regions and themes. Attendees will participate in an abbreviated simulation.

This workshop session will share the World Historical Gazetteer website, its interactive features, and resources to show how to incorporate the study of place names into course curriculum. The World Historical Gazetteer is a digital project that shows how ideas about places are embedded in their names. Ideas and actions change names and meanings associated with them. This workshop will illustrate this concept by introducing new classroom technology.
