There has been a surge of interest in basic income (BI: the payment of a guaranteed income to all citizens/residents) related to fears about automation and the future of work. this contrasts with a longer tradition of thinking about BI as a matter of social justice. In this talk, Jamie Cooke, Director of RSA Scotland, argues that automation is an issue of social justice, particularly for communities like Pittsburgh and Glasgow, which have already suffered in previous eras economic/technological change.

On September 27-29 Professors Jackie Smith and Melanie Hughes, along with their collaborators will host a workshop with more than a dozen researchers from seven different countries where we will analyze new datasets they have compiled on transnational social movement organizations and networks. International scholars, including many junior researchers, will examine how social movements are responding to a variety of changes in the global system, including the end of the Cold War, climate change, and growing incidence of protests in locations around the world.
The Pitt World History Center is offering two Graduate Student Assistantships in Public History for the Spring term of 2019. We seek Pitt graduate students in the Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences, at any stage of their program, who are eligible for university funding and interested in communicating to a non-academic audience about a topic in the transregional or global past. Your proposed activity must have a significant world-historical component and result in a completed public-facing project.
This multidisciplinary panel will provide insight into crafting competitive applications for
graduate school. You will learn how to leverage your personal story,
GRE/GMAT scores, recommendation letters, and leadership experience
into successful applications. With these tips and tools, you will be one
step closer to an advanced degree. Make sure to add this important

Joshua Cooper teaches political science at the University of Hawaii-West Oahu. He teaches advocacy at the International Training Center on Teaching Peace and Human Rights in Geneva, Switzerland as well as the University of New South Wales Diplomacy Training Program and the Oxford University Training Program for Unrepresented Diplomats at the United Nations. He is the U.S. Human Rights Network Universal Periodic Review (UPR) Task Force Co-Chair, coordinating the national campaign for the review of the U.S. human rights record between local and global forums.
The portfolio is an integrated element of the certificate experience. Students should begin their portfolio soon after enrollment in the GSC program. GSC in collaboration with other UCIS centers will hold three workshop sessions to help with aligning expectations and offering specific tips on how to traverse Wordpress to create a tailored portfolio.
