Medieval Arabic sources are replete with stories about Muslims traveling far and wide. The abundance of such examples tempts one to believe that these traveling individuals created and maintained the pan-Islamic cultural commonwealth. Yet the Islamic written legacy is so vast that drawing decisive conclusions that traveling was indeed as widespread as our sources suggest is hardly possible.

In the second of the spring series on integrating literature into a social studies or history curriculum, this workshop will focus on a Small Place. This novel is part fictional and part autobiographical published in 1988 by Jamaica Kincaid. The work is an indictment of the Antiguan government, the tourist industry and Antigua's British colonial legacy. After experiencing a frustrating and complex childhood, Kincaid expresses her opinions about Antigua, a small Caribbean island. The book can be viewed as composed of two parts.

ONE DAY IN THE LIFE OF IVAN DENISOVICH is a novel written by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, first published in November 1962 in the Soviet literary magazine Novy Mir (New World). The story is set in a Soviet labor camp in the 1950s, and describes a single day of an ordinary prisoner, Ivan Denisovich Shukhov. Its publication was an extraordinary event in Soviet literary history—never before had an account of Stalinist repression been openly distributed.

Filmmaker Sam Bozzo examines the growing battle over control of the global water supply in the documentary Blue Gold: World Water Wars. The film examines how major corporations and financial institutions are buying up territories where large water supplies can be found, the fight to protect the Great Lakes, allegations that one of the world's most powerful political families is attempting to corner the market on water in Paraguay, and what ordinary citizens can do to keep the water supply free and shared fairly by all.
