Sewickley Academy's professors, Michael -Ann Cerniglia (History), Joan Cucinotta (English), and Ronald Kinser (Biology, Global Health) will frame Katherine Boo's Behind the Beautiful Forevers in the context of Human Rights and Global Health and using social media to communicate needs and rights. They will share with our K-12 community on how they also used the book to look at globalization and consumerism.

Symposium on China Today

The symposium will open with two keynote lectures on Friday evening on an overview of the issues. THIS WORKSHOP IS ONLY FOR the K-12 EDUCATORS. IT IS NOT OPEN FOR THE PUBLIC

This workshop is the first in a series of six workshops focusing on different global issues and how educators can use literature to further explore the topic. This workshop will focus on Africa and the topic of human security. Dr. Yolanda Covington-Ward, Assistant Professor in Africana Studies will discuss the novel The House at Sugar Beach by Helene Cooper.
Participants will receive a copy of the novel once they have registered. Act 48-credit will be given at the end of the series

Conflicts and Peace Movements within Israel

Avner Gvaryahu is from Breaking the Silence, an organization of Israeli military veterans whose goal is to expose the Israeli public to the reality of everyday life in the Occupied Territories.
Prof. Rachel Kutz-Flamenbaum is a professor in Pitt's Department of Sociology. She is a social movement scholar who will provide background on Human Rights and Peace Movements in Israel and a discussion of the Israeli Human Rights organization, Machsom (Checkpoint) Watch.
