With a dragon tattoo blazoned across her left arm, Kim Hye-Yoon plays the headstrong heroine who, after her dad falls into a coma following a suspicious accident, doggedly seeks answers despite mounting resistance from a variety of corrupt forces. Faced with the additional pressures of tending to her father’s restaurant, taking care of her younger brother, and completing mandatory work training following a short prison stay, our heroine is forced to grow up fast. Simultaneously a vehicle for social critique, a coming-of-age story, and a gripping thriller, The Girl on a Bulldozer is driven by Kim’s visceral, charismatic performance, which won her the 2022 Screen International Rising Star Award at the New York Asian Film Festival.

Winner of the Cannes Film Festival’s Golden Eye award for best documentary, All That Breathes chronicles the story of two brothers who form a makeshift bird hospital to care for the thousands of black kite—the species of bird they have both fallen in love with—that drop daily due to New Delhi’s heavily polluted skies. Through this specific story, the film paints an unflinching but tender portrait of the city—and of India in general, which has experienced political unrest since the country’s recent turn toward Hindu majoritarianism—as a fraught ecology in which humans, animals, and environments of various kinds are deeply interconnected.

Wearing radiant orange and a photogenic smile, our protagonist is a successful influencer promoting a product line called “Happiness”—an emotion supposedly guaranteed for the women consumers she is targeting. That said, blissfully composed exteriors belie a brutal reality of abuse, in not just her own home but that of her newlywed daughter. Winner of the Panorama Audience Award for Best Film at the Berlin International Film Festival, Askar Uzbayev’s searing, chilling portrait of domestic violence confronts viewers with the systemic misogyny in contemporary Kazakhstan.

Chu immediately butts heads with his put-upon white daughter-in-law, Martha (Deb Snyder), a writer who seems to blame him for her own paralyzing inability to focus. But when Chu begins teaching tai chi at a local school, his desire to make a meaningful connection comes to fruition in the most unexpected of ways. Co-written by collaborator James Schamus, PUSHING HANDS was selected by the 1992 Berlin International Film Festival and won three Golden Horse Awards, paving the way for Lee’s worldwide success with films such as CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON and BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN. Directed by Panah Panahi, son of the acclaimed Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi, Hit the Road presents a tonally elusive but ultimately crowd-pleasing spin on the Iranian road-trip movie, swinging from comedy to tragedy as it tracks a family’s drive across the Iranian countryside. The vehicle’s passengers—two middle-aged parents, one reticent older son at the wheel, and a chatty, karaoke-belting six-year-old son in the back—form the film’s narrative and emotional core, riveting attention and winning hearts as the purpose of their journey is gradually revealed.

Abstract: There has been much recent attention paid to the relationship between Buddhism and medicine, especially in regard to numerous studies of the application of mindfulness as an efficacious therapy for everything from depression to schizophrenia. Despite the many comprehensive surveys of Buddhist medical literature across Asia, there remains a paucity of studies on the history of the institutional connections between Buddhist monasteries and the care for the “insane” from the premodern period to the present. This talk aims to introduce the long hidden history of the role monasteries played in this care up through the birth of modern mental institutions in East Asia. Your Role in Refugee Resettlement
Location:
WPU Lower Lounge
Announced by:
International Week on behalf of Office of Engagement & Community Affairs and Hello Neighbor
See Details

When a person arrives in the United States as a refugee, they have material needs: housing, food, transportation, healthcare, and employment, to name a few. Social needs are less visible but equally important: people need community to thrive and experience emotional and physical well-being. Hello Neighbor’s mission is to support refugees by pairing them with neighbors dedicated to building ongoing, supportive relationships. This approach can create a sense of community for refugees and volunteers alike, but can also involve complications such as cultural differences, language barriers, or an imbalance of power. This workshop will explore the question: How can volunteers interacting with people who have refugee status form genuine and healthy relationships? The session will also provide an overview of the refugee resettlement process in the U.S. and include practical tips for communicating with non-English speakers.

We will also be collecting items during the week to be donated to Hello Neighbor to support refugee and immigrant families in Pittsburgh. Visit the Civic Action Week website for more details.

Location:

Sponsored by:
European Studies Center and European Union Center of Excellence
See Details

Over the past decades, Western democracies have experienced dramatic change. In Europe, the most obvious is the decline of the mainstream parties, particularly those on the center-left, that long anchored and defined politics in the region. This talk will examine the reasons for the decline of center-left or social democratic parties in Europe, stressing the role played by these parties changing ideas about the nature of the economy and society.

These changing ideas, I will argue, created incentives and opportunities for new parties, particularly on the populist right, to change their own platforms and appeals in ways that helped reshape how citizens viewed themselves and their relationships with their fellow citizens.

Abstract: Dr. Aronson recounts that “in this informal talk, I will focus on a few of the many ethical and moral dilemmas that I’ve faced working at the intersection of social science-oriented research and human rights practice for the past fifteen-plus years. Examples include my obligations to people I am interviewing about very painful moments in their lives (i.e., the deaths of loved ones); feelings of recurring regret (though I’m not even sure that’s the right word) about advancing my own career through the gathering and analysis of other peoples’ suffering; and, more generally, my responsibilities to the people I interact with who are in far more precarious positions than I am. Part of what I hope to accomplish during our hour together is just to clarify the actual ethical principles that underlie what I experience as feelings or thoughts that ‘keep me up at night.’”

2022 Latinx Connect Conference
Sponsored by:
Center for Ethnic Studies Research and Center for Latin American Studies
See Details

The Latinx Connect conference (October 27-29) aims to move us beyond “celebrating” Latinxs, instead calling for empowerment and justice for the Latinx community, which faces numerous disparities in U.S. society, particularly those at the intersections of Latinx identity (e.g., Afro-Latinxs, Indigenous Latinxs, queer and Trans* Latinxs, undocumented Latinxs).

As the largest pan-ethnic group in the United States, Latinxs are extremely diverse by race, language, immigration, and experiences along the diaspora, which creates opportunity for dialogue. The Latinx Connect conference will provide a space to learn with each other.

The 3-day conference, free and open to all, will bring together students, educators, community leaders, political advocates, and others to dialogue about Latinx identities, histories, cultures, and contemporary issues. Participants will discuss what it means to be Latinx/a/o/e/Hispanic in relation to intersectional identities, education, immigration, public health, arts & culture, history, and other topical areas.

The conference will also serve as a culminating experience for Latinx & Hispanic Heritage Month, recognized annually from September 15 - October 15 to acknowledge the history, culture, and contributions of Americans who identify as Hispanic/Latinx.

Latinx Connect is organized and sponsored by a grassroots transdisciplinary and cross-institutional group of educators and community leaders based in Pittsburgh.

The conference is generously supported by the University of Pittsburgh's Office for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion and the Hispanic Latinx Professional Association (HLPA), Community College of Allegheny County, University Center for International Studies (UCIS), and La Roche University."
