Gina Kim is a Postdoctoral Associate in Japanese Studies, specializing in Trans-Asian art history and visual culture, with a primary research focus on Manchukuo. After the Manchuria Incident in 1932, the imperial presence of Japan in Northeast China became immensely visible. Spanned 14 years until August 1945, Manchukuo marks the climax of Japan’s political, militaristic, and economic expansion amidst the era of the New Order. This talk will explore how the Manchukuo enterprise was manifested in a broader visual culture, encompassing art exhibitions, magazine illustrations, photography, and posters.

The Global Appalachia Reading Group is looking forward to this semester’s new book discussion. In Fall 2024, the World History Center and the Global Studies Center will host the second series of book discussions focusing on Appalachia from a global perspective. The semester’s series theme is Race, Place and Migration. Participation in all four events in the series is not required but encouraged. All events will take place from (please see dates below) 1:30-3:00pm. Copies of the books will be available for those planning to attend the event. The UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change recently predicted that global average temperatures will rise 1.5 degrees Celsius above preindustrial levels in the mid-2030s. Over the last decades, a global network of scholars, policy makers, activists, and others have organized to offer ways to mitigate and even reverse the effects of climate change. What offramps can these solutions and movements offer our collective humanity?
“Eurasian Environments” seeks to provide some reflections to mark the UN’s 2024 Climate Change Conference in Baku, Azerbaijan. This series will examine social justice and sustainability efforts to address climate change by putting scholars of Eurasia in conversation with their peers specializing on Africa, the Americas, Asia, and Europe. The series will comprise six events that will illuminate the challenges and possible solutions to climate change in Eurasia in regional and global contexts.
This event is part of the Eurasian Environments: Climate Justice and Sustainability in Global Context series.

El Día de las Velitas is a symbol of hope, unity, and warmth, a tradition that lights up both the streets and hearts of Colombians across the country. Join us, learn about this celebration, and help us decorate our Holiday trellis that will be on displayed at the Global Hub. Follow easy instructions to create ornaments inspired by different countries from Colombia ,Mexico, Denmark, Japan or write Happy Holidays in any language. There will be a catalog of flags from around the world to paint a flag of your choice. Help us decorate and create a new tradition at the Global Hub.
A Film Act is an interactive film screening, originating in 1960's Argentina. There will be pauses in the screening to digest, react, and discuss as a group. Join in solidarity to watch Lakota Nation vs. United States, a film that portrays Lakota resistance to removal, exploitation, and genocide. Guest speaker: activist and artist Miguel Sague.

The 2024 ASA Teachers’ Workshop, held virtually on December 7, 2024, explored the theme "Islam in Africa." Organized in partnership with the Center for African Studies at the University of Pittsburgh, the workshop highlighted the history and cultural impact of Islam across the African continent. Sessions included discussions on Ajami manuscripts, the diversity of Muslim identities, Sudano-Sahelian architecture, and historical resources from the Gold Road Project, providing educators with content and teaching tools to enrich their classrooms.
