This is the first film in the series, "The Play's the Thing: Vaclav Havel, Art and Politics," presented at Pitt by the Czechoslovak Nationality Room courtesy of the Czech Embassy. "Magicky hlas rebelky" is a 2014 documentary about the Czech singer Marta Kubisova, who has become a symbol in the Czech Republic of the period in history known as the Velvet Revolution (1989), when a mass protest movement led to the fall of communism in Czechoslovakia. The film includes segments of members of the dissident organization Charter 77, including former Czech President Vaclav Havel.
Actress and scholar Ruth Levin will join in a round table discussion titled "Europe en Miniature at the Margins." Focusing on a "Europe en miniature" at the "eastern-most border" of "Europe"--a region of "books and people," as the poet Paul Celan called it--is a region that is home to Austro-German, Jewish, Romanian, and Ukrainian cultures and has produced many poets who were fluent in several languages.
Ruth Levin's concert is devoted to Yiddish art songs and poems written by Jewish poets from the Bukowina, Poland, Romania, and Russia. For the past ten years, Levin worked together with Alexei Belousov, a Russian-Jewish classical guitar concert artist in order to create a special program.
Pittsburgh is a city with deep cultural and historical ties to Europe, and those connections have contributed to the dynamic city culture and style that residents enjoy today. The European Union Center of Excellence/European Studies Center at the University of Pittsburgh is sponsoring a photo contest, “Finding Europe in Pittsburgh,” that showcases the many European influences in our city.
