The pots may be shallow, but bonsai is a deep art form. With origins in Chinese pending, bonsai has developed in Japan for a thousand years. Past-president of the Pittsburgh Bonsai Society Daniel Yomp will give attendees the history, species and design principles of bonsai, followed by a demonstration with a shrub.

Daniel spent three years working and studying at a bonsai nursery in Osaka, Japan and currently teaches at Phipps Conservatory. Register at www.japansocietypa.org/events

Stephan Haggard, Krause Distinguished Professor from the University of California, San Diego will give a lecture based on his book Hard Target: Sanctions, Inducements and the Case of North Korea. North Korea poses a number of challenges to the new Trump administration, from its nuclear and missile programs to the possibility of political instability. Diplomacy with North Korea is further complicated by pressing humanitarian and human rights questions and the complexities of dealign with China as a partner in negotiations with North Korea.

Visualizing Chinese Media Ideologies

Yixin Liang's thesis addresses Biao Qing Bao, a new type of internet meme consisting of an image and a text caption, and development its development on the Chinese internet. In this presentation, Liang will use the concept of media ideology proposed by Illeana Gershon to explain how people's conception of mediated codes of communication shapes their practice and usage of technology and media.

Dhirana: Indian Classical Dance Competition

Dhirana is the University of Pittsburgh's annual Indian classical dance competition. It is a nonprofit organization and all proceeds of the competition go to the Birmingham Free Clinic of Pittsburgh, which provides free medical care for Pittsburgh's under-served population. Pitt began the tradition of hosting a national, intercollegiate competition when Pitt Nrityamala placed first in Laasya 2011. As champions, the team won the honor of hosting Laasya 2012 on their campus.

Hot Metal Empire: Type Design, Media, and Empire in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East

Beginning at the turn of the twentieth century, hot metal typesetting swept through newspaper plants and government printing offices across the United States and Europe – and soon through Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. With missionary-like zeal reminiscent of the Propaganda Fide, and a hunger for lucrative new markets, the manufacturing giant Mergenthaler Linotype and its European licensees carved up the world of script along already lines of empire, colonialism, and the rising power of the United States.
