The 33rd Nationality and Intercultural Exchange Programs Holiday Open House
Sunday, November 17, 2024 from 12-4 pm | Cathedral of Learning Commons| Nationality and Heritage Rooms    

In the spirit of an open house tradition and to foster connections among neighbors, members of the Nationality and Heritage Room Committees will welcome guests into the Cathedral of Learning for an afternoon of exploration and engagement.  Guests will be invited into the Nationality and Heritage Rooms which will be decorated for the holiday season and can participate in traditional crafts and cultural demonstrations to learn about the rooms, the committees, and their ethnic communities and traditions.  In the Cathedral of Learning Commons, guests will enjoy traditional treats as they listen to world and holiday music and shop for handcrafted and cultural wares and other items that represent the cultural diversity of the Nationality and Heritage Rooms.  We are pleased to welcome the community of the Latin American Cultural Center lacc.lasaweb.org this year as our partners.    

The event is free and open to the public.  No prior registration is required. Food and gift items will be available for purchase.

What are the meanings of vagrancy throughout Brazilian history, at least since Abolition of slavery? Who was considered a vagrant? What are the possibilities of resistance to attempts at criminalization? Trying to answer these questions through the intersectionality of class, gender, race and sexualities, the film dialogues with four women activists: Neusa Maria Pereira, journalist and one of the founders of the Movimento Negro Unificado; Shirley Krenak, Indigenous activist of the Krenak people; Jovanna Baby, founder of the organized movement of transvestites and transgender people in Brazil; and Nataraj Trinta, historian and organizer of the Slut Walk in Rio de Janeiro.

Lunch Lecture: Why did Trump win (at such scale)?

The Viadrina Institute for European Studies (IFES) invites you to the following event as part of the Lunch Lectures series:

Sascha Münnich (EUV) in conversation with Randall Halle (Pittsburgh).

The result of the presidential election in the USA was in some ways to be expected and yet it came as a shock to many people: How was Donald Trump able to prevail against Kamala Harris by such a clear margin? What factors explain this popular support and, above all, what failures or mistakes by the ruling Democratic Party and its campaign strategy could have contributed to this outcome?

Sascha Münnich and Randall Halle will discuss these questions with each other and with the audience from a social and cultural science perspective and analyse them on the basis of current surveys and their experiences on the ground: What can we learn from this election, including for the future of Europe?

The discussion will be held in English, questions can be asked in German.

The Graduate Organization for the Study of Europe and Central Asia is happy to announce its 22nd Graduate Student Conference, Navigating Global Challenges: Eurasian Innovation and Local Solutions, and is now accepting proposals.
Russia, Eastern Europe, and Central Asia are regions where global challenges intersect with local context, leading to distinctive solutions informed by unique historical, cultural, and geopolitical contexts. We invite students to explore how these regions offer innovative solutions to address global solutions. We seek papers that highlight the creative, adaptive, and diverse ways these regions confront the issues of the 21st century—from policy responses to cultural adaptations and technological innovations.
Potential topics may include, but are not limited to:
● What innovative local solutions have emerged in response to global crises?
● How have Eurasian countries developed localized public health responses to global pandemics, and what lessons can be applied to future crises?
● How have nations leveraged and responded to emerging digital technologies?
● How are innovative water management practices being implemented in Eurasia?
● What role do historical experiences in the region play in shaping current responses to global challenges?
● How do local institutions and cultural practices impact policy and priorities?
● What role does diplomatic engagement play in shaping regional security and cooperation in Eurasia?
The submission deadline is November 22, 2024. Please submit an abstract (300 words or less) and a CV (max 2 pages) to info.goseca@gmail.com. Accepted papers will be notified by January 3.
