December 2025 - Commemorating the Great 20th Century Greek Poet Andreas Empeirikos:

The Greek Nationality Room of the Nationality Rooms and Intercultural Exchange Program at the University of Pittsburgh and the American Hellenic Foundation of Western Pennsylvania (AHFWP) in collaboration with the European Art Center of Greece (EUARCE), have come together to celebrate the life and unique cultural treasures left to the world by the great Greek poet and man of letters, Andreas Empeirikos. The Website presents readings of his lesser known works, as well as two essays that bring to the fore novel insights including into how his craft can be linked to some of America’s renowned poets and literary movements of the 20th century. Last, we present new poetic and music works inspired by his art.”

In the spirit of an open house tradition and to foster connections among neighbors, members of the Nationality and Heritage Room Committees will welcome guests into the Cathedral of Learning for an afternoon of exploration and engagement. Guests will be invited into the Nationality and Heritage Rooms which will be decorated for the holiday season and can participate in traditional crafts and cultural demonstrations to learn about the rooms, the committees, and their ethnic communities and traditions. In the Cathedral of Learning Commons, guests will enjoy traditional treats as they listen to world and holiday music and shop for handcrafted and cultural wares and other items that represent the cultural diversity of the Nationality and Heritage Rooms.

The event is free and open to the public. No prior registration is required. Food and gift items will be available for purchase.

El Día de las Velitas (Day of the Little Candles) is a beloved Colombian tradition celebrated on the night of December 7th. While it originally honors the Catholic feast of the Immaculate Conception, today it’s a joyful community celebration enjoyed by people of all backgrounds.

Families and neighborhoods light thousands of candles and lanterns, filling the streets with beautiful displays of light. It marks the start of the Holiday season, bringing people together to celebrate with music, food, and festive cheer.

El Día de las Velitas is a symbol of hope, unity, and warmth, a tradition that lights up both the streets and hearts of Colombians across the country.

Familias y vecinos encienden miles de velas y faroles, llenando calles, parques y balcones con hermosos destellos de luz. Esta noche marca el inicio de la temporada navideña en Colombia, un momento para reunirse, compartir música, comida y el espíritu festivo que nos une.
