As an essential part of the center’s mission to provide opportunities for students, faculty and the public to learn about Europe, European integration, and the European Union, the ESC sponsors and hosts an array of scholars and practitioners for visits of varying lengths throughout the year that cover diverse topics of importance to the study of Europe. Topics range from economics, security, and policy to multicultural issues in Europe and the accession of Turkey to the European Union.

Over the years, the ESC has hosted a number of prominent policy makers and dipolmats including John Bruton, the Ambassador of the EU Commission to the US, and Jose Manuel Barroso, the President of the European Commission.  President Barroso was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Pittsburgh in September 2009.
