Faculty-Directed Undergraduate Research Experience

The ESC is pleased to announce funding opportunities for faculty to facilitate and sponsor undergraduate directed research projects. Either as part of a new class proposal, or as stand-alone experiences, the Center offers funds to support undergraduates doing research under the mentorship and guidance of faculty.

Faculty members who provide an ESC undergraduate student with a directed research opportunity will be compensated $500 per student. The money may be used to cover expenses related to their research or to provide the students with wages and fringe benefits (if the student is being paid for their work). Directed research experiences can be for 1, 2 or 3 credits. Faculty supervise the students utilizing an Independent Study/Directed Research course number in their home department and projects can usually be used to fulfill requirements students have for earning a European Union or West European Studies Certificate. However, even if the students are at the maximum credit level or if the work relates only partially to Europe, we can still provide assistance.

Steve Lund, the Assistant Director of the ESC can advertise an opportunity you might have, screen applicants and then forward to you a list of interested students in order make the best match. He can also answer questions you or the student may have and can arrange interviews. If you have a project and would like to provide this opportunity for an undergraduate in the year ahead, please contact Steve Lund at: slund@pitt.edu; 412-648-7422.
