Global Issues through Literature: a series of six workshops focusing on different global issues and how educators at all levels can use literature to further explore the topic. Offered in a book club format, each workshop focuses on the discussion of a specific text lead by a faculty expert.  You can see a full description of current and past faculty book discussions here.

One-credit mini-courses: two series of one-credit mini-courses are offered each fall and spring term on the University of Pittsburgh Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) campuses.  Pitt and CMU collaborate to offer intensive courses taught by expert faculty.  The mini-courses begin Friday evening and conclude Sunday afternoon.  Attendance at mini-courses is free for the K-12 teaching community and Pittsburgh business and community members.

  • BRICS Today:  Focuses on countries with emerging economies: Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.
  • Muslims in a Global Context:  Faculty experts and practitioners teach about issues of critical importance to the understanding of world regions and countries with significant Muslim populations including, for example, Egypt and the North African countries, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, the Gulf States, and Iran.  Lectures address topics that can include, for example, an historical overview, politics, policies, the role of religion in society, the role of women in statehood, education, economics, business development, US security and the region/countries being examined, and current cultural trends.

The Global Cinema ProjectThe GSC provides funding for and assists publicizing film series with a global dimension on campus and across Pittsburgh.  You can find a listing of annual film festivals here.

LecturesDuring most weeks of the academic year, GSC sponsors at least one, and often up to three, one to two-hour long on-campus lectures that address critical global issues. You can find a listing of events on our GSC events calendar here.

  

Additional Outreach Educational and Curriculum Development Programs

Professional Development Workshops:  GSC sponsors a variety of professional development activities for those who wish to improve their teaching/practice and understanding of critical global issues including day-long workshops; certification/professional development credits; off-campus lectures on global issues; and funding support for K-12 teachers. Featuring presentations by Pitt faculty and other experts, workshops are offered on Pitt’s main campus for K-12 teachers who want to incorporate specific aspects of global studies into their curriculum and teaching.

Act 48 CreditThe Global Studies Center, in conjunction with the University Center for International Studies (UCIS), can provide Act 48 credit for teacher participation in workshops and professional development programs.

Lending Library and Resources:  Educators, students, and community members have access to the growing GSC lending library. A collection of books for all ages, instructional videos, culture kits, films, and other materials related to global issues is available to educators, students, and community members through the GSC lending library.  Lesson plans with a global studies focus can be downloaded from our Website free of charge.

Speakers Bureau:  The GSC will assist K-12 teachers, individual schools, school districts, and civic and business groups to connect with speakers with expertise in specific global issues.
