Highlighting the action filled life of Ip Man, the master of wing chun (martial arts), the film spans from the 1930s to Ip Man's death in 1972. Although India became independent in August 1947, community leaders were planning for an independent state long before. Focusing on the ways that Indian Dalit and women activists attempted to redefine ideas of democracy and unity to make Indian politics more open to them, Dr. Emily Rook-Koepsel will draw attention to minority attempts to reconceptualize universal citizenship, Indian identity, dissent, and principled democracy during a moment of uncertainty in India’s political life. Pulgasari (1985) is a North Korean dark fantasy film about a selfish king’s attempt to foil the working class’ plan to overthrow him from power. Built by a blacksmith, Pulgasari only becomes alive and grows after consuming blood and an assortment of tools. The monster soon earns a vital role in the battle between the working class and the king and his royal army. Online Lecture: Language Standardization and Hougen Resistance in Touhoku, Japan

104 years since the Japanese state formally designated a standard spoken language, Edwin Everhart argues that standardization is still an active process. Focusing on language of the Touhoku region, Everhart describes how some language users resist the hegemony of standard language and the discourse that local dialect is obsolescent, ugly, or backward.
