Since the opening of Japan’s borders to the West in the late nineteenth century, the kimono has become a dynamic and evolving source of inspiration for global fashion design, particularly in the West. It has had an impact on early haute couture and influenced the “Japanese Fashion Revolution” of the 1980s, as well as the work of contemporary fashion designers. This presentation will examine the kimono as a sophisticated garment that has continually influenced the evolution of fashion.

Through this discussion, we hope to shed light on the devastating effects of the war in Ukraine as the conflict erases the nations' sense of identity in the public realm- the cities, villages, streets, parks, and other spaces that help define the life of a place and its people. Presented by Dr. Sofia Dyak.

Mariana Muaze is an Associate Professor in the History Department at the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (UNIRIO), and author of the book “Memórias da Viscondessa: família e poder no Brasil Império” (Zahar, 2008), which won the Jorge Zahar Prize and National Archives Research Award in 2007.
