Nearly half of all American adults--90 million people--have difficulty understanding and using health information, have a higher rate of hospitalization, use emergency services, and cost billions of dollars in avoidable health care expenditure (Institute of Medicine Report, Health Literacy: A Prescription to End Confusion). Beginning at the turn of the twentieth century, hot metal typesetting swept through newspaper plants and government printing offices across the United States and Europe – and soon through Asia, Africa, and the Middle East.
