European Studies Center

 
The European Studies Center (ESC) was established in 1984 and is charged with the university-wide responsibility of coordinating and developing scholarship and teaching related to Europe. The Center promotes the study of Europe at the University of Pittsburgh by developing new courses, lectures, symposia, and conferences with international participants. Center research foci include comparative public policy, social and intellectual history, multiculturalism in Europe, questions of identity, and Europe’s historical and contemporary role in the world.

Intended Audience:
Students, 9-12, Faculty, K-12

This unit is designed to introduce students to countries of the European Union; energy consumption and choices; and climate change, policy, and impacts.  It is targeted to the educator's 11th and 12th grade students in the following courses: AP Environmental Science; IB Environmental Systems and Society; AP Human Geography; and IB Individuals and Society: Geography.
 

Intended Audience:
Students, 6-8, Faculty, K-12

This unit is designed to introduce studentst to diplomacy skills and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through the perspective of EU member countries.  It is targeted to the educator team's elective course focused on media and science for 7th and 8th grade students.
 

Intended Audience:
Students, Higher Education, Faculty, Post-Secondary

This unit enhances students' global awareness as they use critical thinking and research skills to argue for or against Brexit.  It is targeted to the educator's Intercultural Communication course for undergraduate students.
