Michele Reid-Vazquez

Michele Reid-Vazquez is an Associate Professor in the Department of Africana Studies. She is the founding Director of the Center for Ethnic Studies Research, and leads the Afrolatinidad Studies Initiative. She serves as the faculty advisor for the Latinx Student Association and the ADDverse+poesia Poetry Collective. Dr. Reid-Vazquez is the author of The Year of the Lash: Free People of Color in Cuba and the Nineteenth-Century Atlantic World (2011). She is also the host and executive producer of the scholarly podcast, Dialogues in Afrolatinidad, launched in 2021. In addition, she has published numerous articles in a variety of edited volumes and journals. Her second monograph, Black Mobilities in the Age of Revolution: Comparative Politics, Migration, and Freedom in the Caribbean, focused on Cuba, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, and Trinidad, is under contract with the University of Pennsylvania Press. Projects-in-progress include exploring Afro-Latinx histories in Pennsylvania and Ohio, including Roberto Clemente as a civil rights activist and the impact of the Puerto Rican migration in Ohio; and family history, memory and migration linking 19th-century Haiti, Cuba, and South Carolina.
