Pitt women’s basketball alumna Marcedes Walker doesn’t know how she’ll feel when she first steps onto the Olympic 3x3 courts in Paris.
“Oh, that goes beyond nerves,” Walker said. “It still hasn’t hit me yet.”
When Walker takes the floor for Team Azerbaijan on July 30, it’ll be the culmination of a career that began right here in Pittsburgh.
Walker was a three-sport standout at University City High School in Philadelphia and was an honorable mention McDonald’s All-American. She then came to Pitt in 2004 and racked up multiple accolades. She was named first-team all-Big East twice and an AP All-American honorable mention twice. She also remains the program’s all-time leading rebounder (1,162) and sixth on the all-time scoring list (1,870).
More than that, though, Walker signed on to play for Pitt and coach Agnus Berenato after a 6-20 season in 2003-04. Top-tier recruits were hard to come by.
By the time Walker left the program, though, the Panthers had enjoyed three straight winning seasons, two NCAA tournament appearances and an 83-46 overall record in her four years.
