CLAS@Pitt Monthly Calendar/January 2022

CLAS MONTHLY NEWSLETTER
Heading into the second week of 2022, we face circumstances highlighted by uncertainty, that at the same time, ring familiar. Whether it is the pandemic’s impact on life in the region, the political, economic, and cultural shifts that are so evident all-over Latin America and the Caribbean or the recurring motifs that we understand so well, there is a rich legacy of studies and understanding that can help us move forward. The relevance of studies that aim to clarify, orient, and focus a course of action is as important as ever.

We, at CLAS, remain committed to supporting such pursuits for our students, faculty, and broader community, and look forward to the opportunities this coming year presents. We hope you join as we work to make it our best one yet.

Indigenous Language and Culture in the Andes and Beyond: Global Quechua
T/Th 11-12:15

This interdisciplinary sociolinguistic course explores the current context of Quechua language and culture, beginning in the Andes and expanding globally. While Quechua is strongly rooted in local Andean traditions and practices, the language and its speakers live, interact, and engage with the modern world. Therefore, we will learn about Quechua traditions in the Andes as well as how those both impact and are impacted by a broader global community. Students can expect to focus on topics such as language revitalization, Quechua diaspora communities, indigenous health, music fusion, and Quechua in the digital realm.
