2023-24 Billie Seddon Lozano Visiting Scholar Program

To celebrate and honor the life of Lilian (Billie) Seddon Lozano, the Center for Latin American Studies (CLAS) at the University of Pittsburgh is launching the Billie Seddon Lozano Visiting Scholar Program. The Program awards up to two short-term fellowships annually to scholars in the arts, humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences engaged in research projects on Latin America and the Caribbean for stays of one month during the 2024-25 Pitt Academic Year (September 2024 - April 2025).

Visiting scholars are expected to devote their time to research at the Eduardo Lozano Latin American Collection at the University Library System (ULS), and to engage in CLAS’s scholarly activities during their stay. At the end of their stay, fellows are expected to present their work to CLAS scholarly community and to help strengthening the Library’s Latin American Collection by identifying publications within their area of knowledge to be recommended for acquisition by the library.

Although applications developing any topic on Latin America and the Caribbean are accepted, priority will be given to proposals focusing on the Amazon region. Applications from residents of Latin American and Caribbean countries and underrepresented groups are especially welcome.

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. degree or be in the final stages of writing their PhD dissertation. Applications can be submitted in Spanish, Portuguese, or English.

For full consideration, applications must be received by March 1, 2024. Results are expected to be released by April 2025. All candidates must apply online by submitting materials at the link below.

  • Cover letter, indicating:
    • the preferred month for the stay during the academic year (September 1, 2024 to April 30, 2025)
    • title of the proposed research project
    • a statement explaining why the Eduardo Lozano Latin American Collection would be relevant for its development.
  • Curriculum vitae 
  • A description of the proposed research (up to 2,000 words) 
If the applicant is a graduate student:
  •   One letter of recommendation from current faculty

The grant will cover transportation and visa costs (if applicable) and a stipend of $2,500 to pay for maintenance and housing. Fellows are expected to stay in Pittsburgh for the duration of the program.

Recipients must acknowledge the assistance of the Center for Latin American Studies, University Center for International Studies, University of Pittsburgh, providing support for the grant in any publication or other product resulting from research supported by this grant.  Fellows will work with the Office of International Services to obtain immigration documents that will be used to apply for a visa at a US Embassy or Consulate.

Programa Leitorados Guimarães Rosa

O Programa Leitorados Guimarães Rosa financia leitores brasileiros para atuar em Instituições de Ensino Superior Estrangeiras (IES) e promover a língua portuguesa e a literatura brasileira nessas instituições.

A pré-seleção de candidatos cabe à CAPES com o apoio de consultores ad hoc. A validação ou não dos candidatos, a concessão de bolsa bem como sua alocação cabe ao Ministério de Relações Exteriores (MRE), por meio da Divisão de Temas Internacionais Culturais e de Língua Portuguesa (DCLP).

Tipo de programa: Bolsa individual

Objetivos

  • Promover a língua portuguesa na variante brasileira nos países de atuação dos Leitores.
  • Proporcionar maior visibilidade internacional à cultura, à literatura e ao ensino superior brasileiros.
  • Ampliar o acesso de professores com experiência na área prioritária do Edital a centros internacionais de excelência.
  • Ampliar a colaboração entre instituições nacionais e estrangeiras, bem como entre docentes que atuam no Brasil e no exterior, nas áreas do Edital.
 
Modalidade de bolsa e benefícios
Modalidade:
  • Leitor - modalidade de bolsa específica do MRE, seu financiador, definida pela Portaria Interministerial nº 01, de 20 de março de 2006.
Benefícios custeados pelo MRE:
  • Bolsa mensal
  • Passagem de ida e passagem para regresso definitivo ao país de origem
Obs: As instituições de Ensino Superior estrangeiras custearão as contrapartidas das IES, que se diferenciam conforme a instituição, e constam na descrição dos benefícios no Anexo I do Edital.

Duração: O exercício do leitorado será de até 02 (dois) anos e poderá ser prorrogado uma única vez, por igual período, mediante a autorização da DCLP/IGR/MRE e se a legislação local permitir, totalizando-se quatro anos, observado o interesse e a disponibilidade orçamentária e financeira do IGR/MRE.

Convocatoria del Center for Latin American Studies de Pitt - Estancia Postdoctoral

La estancia visitante en CLAS consiste en un estipendio anual de 55,000 USD sin beneficios, sujeto a retención de impuestos estatales y federales. Además, existe la posibilidad de incluir los gastos de pasaje aéreo basado en la necesidad. La estancia postdoctoral en CLAS asegura la afiliación con la Universidad de Pittsburgh por el periodo de duración de la estancia, otorgando acceso a las bibliotecas, archivos, eventos académicos, etc. Según disponibilidad, se otorgará un espacio de trabajo en las instalaciones del Centro. 

Por la duración de la estancia visitante, lxs beneficiarixs deberán: 

  • Realizar una investigación independiente y original que contribuya al campo de estudios afrolatinoamericanos, entendido de manera multidisciplinar.
  • Participar activamente en la organización de programas académicos. 
  • Involucrarse en la vida académica de la unidad.

Criterios de Selección

  • Título de Doctorado obtenido con preferencia posteriormente a 2010. 
  • Tema de investigación relacionado con las experiencias y la historia de las personas afrodescendientes y sus respectivas sociedades en América Latina, incluyendo el Caribe hispanohablante.
  • Trayectoria de contribución al campo de estudios afrolatinoamericanos. 
  • Cómo postularse

    Se deberá completar el formulario on line con la siguiente información:

  • Curriculum Vitae resumido (Times New Roman 12, espaciado 1.5), máximo 5 páginas.
  • Proyecto de investigación a desarrollar de máximo 3 páginas A4 (Times New Roman 12, espaciado 1).
  • Dos cartas de recomendación. 
  • Se ruega adjuntar toda la documentación en un solo documento pdf. Si las cartas de recomendación serán enviadas de manera confidencial directamente a consorcio@fas.harvard.edu, es importante identificar los contactos en el formulario. 

    La evaluación de las candidaturas la realizará el equipo académico del Consorcio.

    El plazo para postularse es el 11 de enero, 2024 a las 9:00 am EST. Los resultados se comunicarán directamente a los candidatos seleccionados, a partir del 1 de marzo de 2024.

    Brazil Fulbright Distinguished Scholar Chair at Pitt

    Applications open in June 2024! 

    The Brazil Fulbright Distinguished Scholar Chair is an opportunity designed for Brazilian scholars to participate in lecturing, research and teaching activities to promote the highest level of scholarly ties and dialogue and in broadening mutual understanding between their respective cultures and societies.

    Through an annual competition, a Brazilian national affiliated with a Brazilian institution of higher education and/or research, within the fields of Humanities, Social Sciences and Natural Sciences, will be appointed as a visiting scholar, for four months for the purpose of teaching, lecturing and/or conducting research at the University of Pittsburgh.

    Selection priority will be given to scholars whose activities are related to graduate programs in Brazil, with the objective of increasing the impact of the U.S. Awardee’s experience in Brazil. The Awardee will receive US$30,000 for a period of four months (or prorated on a daily basis for stays shorter than four months but longer than three months) upon proof of purchase of health insurance and round-trip ticket on a U.S. carrier.
