“Advancing Interdisciplinary and Engaged Research in the Urban Amazon” with the Carmelo Mesa-Lago Distinguished Keynote Speaker, Dr. Carissa Schively Slotterback, Dean of the University of Pittsburgh’s Graduate School of Public and International Affairs (GSPIA) 

Latin America and the Caribbean are facing enormous challenges. The region is experiencing extreme climate events, growing anti-democratic movements, increased international and internal migration, and growing social inequality. Such conditions present opportunities to address ongoing challenges in a variety of contexts. We aim to promote scholarly discussions around issues that include, but are not limited to: 

• Sustainability: Climate change mitigation and adaption
• Economics: Degrowth, development
• Politics: Democracy, political parties, international relations
• Human Rights: Education, labor, inequality, gender, race, ethnicity, indigeneity, migration
• Urban and Regional Planning: Transportation, infrastructure, housing, land policy
• Culture and Religion

The LASPP community of scholars will meet in Pittsburgh to shed some light on the hemisphere’s biggest challenges while discussing ways to contribute to a sustainable and more inclusive future. Through this conference, participants will have access to a vast professional network, as well as the opportunity to present their papers to a diverse audience committed to working in the region.
