Dr. Mohinder and Saroj Bahl Grant in Indian Studies

Purpose of grant: 
To fund research or other educational expenses for projects and education that support India, Indian Studies, or people of Indian origin
Eligibility: 

Funded through a generous donation in the name of Dr. Mohinder Bahl and Mrs. Saroj Bahl, students, faculty, and affiliated researchers may apply for up to $500 to help fund research, travel, or other educational expenses for projects and education that support India, Indian Studies, or people of Indian origin. Strong preference will be given to students, faculty, or researchers with demonstrated financial need.

Requirements: Application form (link); statement of purpose (1000 words or less) that describes how the project, travel, research, or educational expense will be used to fulfill the mission of the Dr. Mohinder and Saroj Bahl fund of supporting India, Indian Studies, and people of Indian origin; detailed budget including other sources of funding. Summer POSCO Scholarship in Korean Studies (Undergraduate)

Students may apply for POSCO funds up to $500 to help support research in Korean Studies, Korean language acquisition, or study abroad to Korea during the summer

Japanese Studies Non-Language Summer Study Scholarship

The Japanese Studies Summer Non-language Study Scholarship is a $3500 award for undergraduate students to complete a summer study program in Japan
Eligibility: 

In order to be eligible for the Japanese Summer Study Scholarship- Non-Language, students must:

  • Be Pitt students studying at an approved program in Japan during the summer
  • Preference will be given to applicants who are Asian Studies Certificate students

Asian Studies Center Student Group Event

Amount: 
up to $300 per event

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.

Purpose of grant: 
The ASC student group event funding is meant to allow student groups which plan on hosting an event related to Asian studies to apply for a portion of the event's cost. Awards are capped at $300.

All registered student groups are eligible to apply for funding.

Summer Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships for Graduate and Undergraduate Students

Amount: 
$5,000 of tuition + a stipend of $2,500
Purpose of grant: 
This grant, funded by the US Department of Education, assists the development of knowledge, resources, and trained personnel for modern foreign language and area studies; stimulates the attainment of foreign language acquisition and fluency
Eligibility: 

Fellows must be enrolled in an intensive program of language study.

  1. The study program must provide the fellowship recipient with the equivalent of one academic year of foreign language study.
  2. Study programs must be approved by the Asian Studies Center.
  3. Summer FLAS Fellowships can be used for Chinese and Japanese only at third-year level or above.  Summer FLAS Fellowships can be used for Korean at the second-year level or above.
  4. The language program must consist of at least 140 classroom hours for second-year courses; 120 hours for third or fourth-year courses.
  5. The language program must last a minimum of 6 weeks.
  6. The course must be taken for a letter grade that is based on tests administered during the course.
  7. Factors that are important in the review of applicants include the overall quality of the student’s academic record, and the relevance of the FLAS Fellowship target language to the student’s plan of study. These fellowships may only be awarded to US citizens or US permanent residents.

Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships for Undergraduate Students

$10,000 of tuition + a stipend of $5,000
Purpose of grant: 
This grant, funded by the US Department of Education, assists the development of knowledge, resources, and trained personnel for modern foreign language and area studies; stimulates the attainment of foreign language acquisition and fluency
Eligibility: 

These fellowships may only be awarded to US citizens or US permanent residents.

FLAS Fellowships are awarded for the 2-semester full academic year (no semester awards).  Fellows must be enrolled in a language course and an East Asia-focused, non-language area studies course during each semester of the award period. ASC FLAS Fellowships are only given to students studying Chinese, Japanese, Korean, or Vietnamese at second-year level or above.. Factors that are important in the review of applicants include the overall quality of the student’s academic record, and the relevance of the FLAS Fellowship target language to the student’s plan of study.

This grant provides a tuition award to Pitt undergraduate students to study Japanese during the summer at an approved program of study in the US or Japan
Eligibility: 
  • Applicants must be Pitt students studying Japanese at an approved program of study in the United States or Japan during the summer
  • This award cannot be applied to SEALS Japan courses at the University of Pittsbugh. (Other financial aid opportunities are available for that program.)
  • Preference will be given to applicants who will have completed at least one year of Japanese language study or the equivalent by the inception of the award period

This grant provides tuition awards to Pitt undergraduates who will study in Japan for one sememster (fall or spring) or a year (fall and spring)
Eligibility: 
  • Applicant must be Pitt undergraduate students who have demonstrated a strong record in Japan studies
  • Applicant must study in Japan for one semester or one year
  • Preference is given to applicants who will have completed at least two years of language study or the equivalent by the inception of the award period.

    Japan Studies Undergraduate Scholarship

    Amount: 
    $4000
    Purpose of grant: 
    This provides a $4,000 award to a Pitt undergraduate student who has compiled a strong record in Japanese language (at least two years of study) and in area studies courses on Japan.
    Eligibility: 

    Applicant must be:

    • Pitt undergraduate student
    • Strong record in Japanese language (2+ years of study) and area studies on Japan
    • Award can only be used at the University of Pittsburgh's Oakland campus during the academic year while the student is in residence at the Oakland campus.
