Undergraduate Funding

This provides a $4,000 award to a Pitt undergraduate student who has compiled a strong record in Japanese language (at least two years of study) and in area studies courses on Japan.

Eligibility:

Applicant must be:

  • Pitt undergraduate student
  • Strong record in Japanese language (2+ years of study) and area studies on Japan
  • Award can only be used at the University of Pittsburgh's Oakland campus during the academic year while the student is in residence at the Oakland campus.

  • Official transcripts
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • A written statement (five pages double spaced maximum) summarizing academic goals, career objectives, research interests, and plans for use of the award

All out-of-state students who take Intensive Summer Japanese (JPNSE 1061 or JPNSE 1062) will receive this scholarship.

  • Indicate whether you are interested in the First Year Japanese program or the Second Year Japanese program
  • Explain your academic background
  • Include a statement of purpose explaining the reason for studying Japanese and how training in Japanese will fit into your overall academic goal and/or professional career.

This grant funds summer Chinese language study for an undergraduate or graduate studen.

Applicant must have completed at least two years of Chinese language study or the equivalent by the inception of the award period
