The Center for Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies at the University of Pittsburgh is proud to offer an online masterclass series focused on Eurasian studies. The series provides a forum for experts to offer an instructional introduction to a specialized form of knowledge. The workshops are eclectic in terms of topics, but are united by the fact that they each offer a path toward skills and techniques not easily learnable in books or even a university classroom. These workshops offer an opportunity for doctoral students and scholars to expand their intellectual horizons, as well as a glimpse "under the hood" into cutting-edge research.
PLEASE NOTE that registrations are limited and will be confirmed on a first-come, first-serve basis for Ph.D. students and faculty.
Researching East European History in German-language Archives: An Overview
This two-part masterclass offers an introduction to researching East and Southeast European history using archival material in German. Led by Dr. Tamara Scheer (University of Vienna), the meetings will include an introduction to German Kurrentschrift with practical exercises as well as resources and strategies as to how to approach different institutions and archival collections. The workshop is open to everyone interested in historical research in the region, including early-career scholars planning their research trips and those who wish to brush up on their archival skills.

Most of the work that goes into an oral history interview project takes place after the interview. This hour of the workshop walks through an oral history project from thinking through topics to archiving and analyzing results, with a focus on the opportunities and challenges that researchers face when doing oral history work in Central Asia.

Ethical engagement with Trauma: Oral History Interviewing with Respondents in and from Xinjiang
With reference to the instructor's experiences conducting oral history interviews in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in 2015~2016, participants will grapple with topics such as accessibility, safety, complex insider/outsider positionality, multilingual note-taking and translation, and using ethnography to make sense of difficult memories and generational trauma.
