Lauren Jewell is an undergraduate student majoring in Combined Accelerated Studies in Education with a minor in Swahili and a certificate in African Studies. She is currently serving as one of the Student Ambassadors in CAS.
Lauren started studying Swahili in the study abroad program ‘Pitt in Tanzania’ through Fulbright Hays GPA. Upon her return to the University, she continued to study Swahili with an academic year FLAS Fellowship and returned to Tanzania for a second time with a summer term FLAS Fellowship. At Pitt, she serves as the President of the African Student Language Association (ALSA), a program dedicated to the proliferation and prevalence of African Languages offered at higher-level learning institutions through internal and external outreach programs. She also serves on the leadership board for Model African Union (MAU). Lauren is also a sister of the Xi chapter of Kappa Delta at Pitt. Lauren hopes to continue taking Swahili and furthering her studies in East Africa through education and ESL support!
