The Center for Governance and Markets will host the Annual Conference for CESS 2023, which will be held at the University of Pittsburgh from October 19-22, 2023. The CESS 2023 annual conference keynote speaker is Dr. Ayşe Zarakol, author of After Defeat: How the East Learned to Live with the West and Before the West: the Rise and Fall of Eastern World Orders.
This seminar delves into the multifaceted nature of the Africa-China relationship and its impact on the international stage. Exploring the economic, political, socio-cultural, and developmental dimensions of this dynamic partnership, the workshop seeks to analyze how the growing interaction between Africa and China is shaping and influencing the global geopolitical landscape and economic development.
The 30th annual meeting of the Association for Japanese Literary Studies will be held at University of Pittsburgh May 12–14, 2023 in the Cathedral of Learning Room 332 & Room 324. The event will be hosted by Charles Exley and Elizabeth Oyler, University of Pittsburgh, with the cooperation of Christopher Lowy and Yoshihiro Yasuhara, Carnegie Mellon University.
Through experiential learning, high school students engage directly with global issues by assuming the role of world leaders and negotiating responses to timely topics.

Asia has been undergoing a historic transformation that has often been referred to as the “Asian Century.” Representing 60% of the world’s population and 4 of the 10 largest economies, Asia plays a critical and ever-expanding role on the global stage. Transnational flows of people, goods, and ideas in and out of Asia have fueled much of the rapid change within the region and increased its influence abroad.

All papers will be pre-circulated and there will be no presentations. Audience members are strongly urged to read the papers by the members of the panel that they plan on attending in advance. The Undergraduate Asian Studies Research Conference will be an opportunity for undergraduates at any level to meet with other students interested in Asian Studies from around the northeast U.S. Students interested in presenting will participate in panels, with speaking times between 10-15 minutes. To register for the program, students only need to provide a subject for their paper/ title and the name and email of a faculty member who can vouch for them. Students who would like to attend the conference and hear the papers are also encouraged to register.
