Directed by Wong Kar Wai and released in 2013, The Grandmaster is a martial arts drama that takes place during the decline of the last Chinese dynasty. Highlighting the action filled life of Ip Man, the master of wing chun (martial arts), the film spans from the 1930s to Ip Man's death in 1972. Pulgasari (1985) is a North Korean dark fantasy film about a selfish king’s attempt to foil the working class’ plan to overthrow him from power. Built by a blacksmith, Pulgasari only becomes alive and grows after consuming blood and an assortment of tools. The monster soon earns a vital role in the battle between the working class and the king and his royal army. Join us at 3 PM on Zoom (online) on Friday, April 10th for a screening and introduction by Professor Mark Best.

JOIN US FOR A VIRTUAL SERIES of films based on the Malay folktales of a blood-sucking ghost born from a woman who dies in childbirth. The smash hit premiered in April 1957 and screened for nearly three months at the local Cathay cinemas. Its success spawned many sequels, including in 2004 and 2019. It is also said to have launched the Pontianak genre in Singapore and Malaysia, with rival Shaw producing its own Pontianak trilogy.

This special event is a screening of the 2006 digitally restored print of a A Throw of Dice (director Franz Osten), a 1929 silent Indian film based on a story from the Mahabharata. The film follows two kings as they vie for the love of a hermit's daughter, the beautiful Sunita. This unique historical gem will be accompanied live by a musical score created for the film by New York jazz artist Rez Abbasi and his quartet. He composed the score on behalf of the New York Guitar Society in 2019 and subsequently released it as an album from Whirlwind Records.

Nearly two million Vietnamese immigrants escaped to the United States in the aftermath of the Vietnam War, many of them prospering in America's $8 billion nail economy. Join us as we explore this topic with a screening of the film documentary, "Nailed It!," followed by a panel discussion with members of Pittsburgh's Vietnamese community on the enduring economic entrepreneurialism of 20th & 21st century Vietnamese immigrants to the United States, and a K-14 educator workshop on how to utilize digital storymapping in the classroom.

Yi Yi （一 一） is a 2000 Taiwanese film written and directed by Edward Yang. The film's theme centers around the emotional struggles of an engineer named NJ and three generations of his middle-class Taiwanese family in Taipei.
The title in Chinese means "one by one" (meaning "one after another"). When written in vertical alignment, the two strokes resemble the character for "two": (二). Yi Yi premiered at the 2000 Cannes Film Festival, where Yang won the Best Director Award. It is now generally regarded as one of the major films of the 21st century.

Dr. William Tsutsui, President of Hendrix College in Arkansas, will come to campus during International Week. He will be giving a public talk on “Godzilla on My Mind” and we will follow with a screening of the original Gojira. Dr. Tsutsui is THE expert on the Godzilla movies. He is a Japanese historian (a Japanese-American ethnically).
