Dr. Mohinder and Saroj Bahl Grant in Indian Studies

Purpose of grant: 
To fund research or other educational expenses for projects and education that support India, Indian Studies, or people of Indian origin
Eligibility: 

Funded through a generous donation in the name of Dr. Mohinder Bahl and Mrs. Saroj Bahl, students, faculty, and affiliated researchers may apply for up to $500 to help fund research, travel, or other educational expenses for projects and education that support India, Indian Studies, or people of Indian origin. Strong preference will be given to students, faculty, or researchers with demonstrated financial need.

Requirements: Application form (link); statement of purpose (1000 words or less) that describes how the project, travel, research, or educational expense will be used to fulfill the mission of the Dr. Mohinder and Saroj Bahl fund of supporting India, Indian Studies, and people of Indian origin; detailed budget including other sources of funding. Rawski Graduate Student- Faculty Research Partnership in China and Chinese Studies Fellowship

Purpose of grant: 
Graduate Student- Faculty research partnerships which will support collaborative research between a faculty member and a graduate student.

$6000 Graduate Student- Faculty research partnerships which will support collaborative research between a faculty member and a graduate student. The faculty member and graduate student will commit to meeting during the Spring semester as preparation for graduate summer research. They will commit to produce a product during the Fall semester after the award. Graduate students will be awarded $5000 and their faculty partner will be awarded $1000 to complete the research project.

Rawski Summer Faculty Research Scholarship in China and Chinese Studies

Pittsburgh-Renmin Joint Seed Fund

Purpose of grant: 
Facilitating joint research and publication projects between faculty at University of Pittsburgh and Renmin University
Eligibility: 
  • Project must be a collaborative project with co-project leaders at University of Pittsburgh and Renmin University.
  • Preference will be given to projects with a focus on: Green Supply Chains; Impact/ Management of urban environments on sustainability and health outcomes; Research in the areas of transportation and connectivity, energy improvements in public buildings, gray water innovations, and eco districts; and Food-energy-water connections.

China Studies Small Grants

This grant is a meant to support China Studies faculty in bringing speakers, conferences, and other academic events on to the Pitt campus
Eligibility: 

Full-time and part-time tenure-stream, tenured and non tenure-stream faculty (including lecturers, adjunct faculty, and contract faculty) at all Schools, Departments, Centers, Institutes and Campuses on the University of Pittsburgh are eligible to submit proposals.

Faculty must submit an application here and upload:

  1. 1-2 typed proposal describing the goals of the project and a rationale for the items requested
  2. Itemized budget of expected project costs including the exact time period when funds will be needed.
  3. A completed ASC Funding Request Form.

Japan Studies Publication Support

Amount: 
up to $3000
Deadline details: 

Rolling deadline. Applications are reviewed the first week of each month (unless the university is in recess). Please apply at least two months in advance of the need for this support.

Purpose of grant: 
This grant can support (a) preparation of a manuscript publication related to Japan or (b) a subsidy paid directly to publisher to defray costs of publishing book(s) related to Japan by full-time Pitt faculty.
Eligibility: 

Full-time faculty working on a manuscript publication related to Japan are eligible to apply for the Japan Studies Publication Support grant. Preference will be given to 1) single-authored books, 2) followed by co-authored books, and 3) then edited books of essays and translations. In the case of 2) and 3), at least one of the authors, translators or editors must be an eligible member of the University of Pittsburgh faculty. It can also be used by the author to pay for proofreading, copyediting, indexing, or any other costs of preparing a manuscript for publication. Limited funds are available in any given year to provide publication subsidies, and not all requests can be met. Generally, more than one request per project/book is unlikely to be funded.

Korea Studies Research Grant

Amount: 
$1000-$2000
Purpose of grant: 
This grant supports faculty research or conference presentations focused on North or South Korea
Eligibility: 

This grant covers travel expenses, research or conference expenses, and incidentals for research projects based on a concrete and clearly defined agenda in Korean studies OR exploratory Korean Studies Research based on well-defined research proposals. Full-time and part-time tenure-stream, tenured and non tenure-stream faculty (including lecturers, adjunct faculty, and contract faculty) at all Schools, Departments, Centers, Institutes and Campuses of the University of Pittsburgh are eligible to submit proposals.

Faculty are eligible to apply for up to $2000 for one year of research. Preference is given to projects that begin during the current fiscal year.
