A note from CLAS Associate Director:
We are thrilled to introduce a new series, Border-to-Border, where we will examine the impact, variables, and dynamics of forced migration on countries in the Hemisphere, and will analyze, reflect, and report on the current situation. For the inaugural event, on February 26, Dr. Scott Morgenstern (Pitt, Political Science) will host Federico Ríos, an acclaimed photojournalist who has published numerous works on Latin America, armed conflict, the environment, and its relationship with society. His work has appeared frequently in The New York Times, National Geographic, Stern, GEO, Time, Paris Match and LFI Magazine.
Dr. Flávio Limoncic (History, UniRio) will teach a one-credit course, Feb 9-11, on Jewish Migration to Latin America. The following week, Visiting Scholar Esteban Corella Ovares (History, UCR) will teach a one-credit course, February 16-18, titled Encounters with the Empire: Relations between Central America and the United States, 19-21st centuries.
Charlemos continues on February 26, with Omar Sanchez-Sibony (Texas State U) and Rachel Schwartz (U Oklahoma) having a conversation on State capacity, institutions and Democracy in Guatemala, moderated by Laura Gamboa (Utah). Later that day, the Slavery and Memorialization Series continues with an event focused on the Native American East Coast. Please look through this month’s newsletter for additional details on these and other exciting events at CLAS. We hope you can join us.
