Today marks the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month (HHM) at Pitt. This is a growing grassroots celebration spearheaded by the School of Education's Gina Garcia, now in its third year on campus.

Why now? Several territories formerly under Spanish colonial rule declared national independence around this time in the early 19th century. Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua and Costa Rica celebrate the anniversary on September 15th; Mexico on the 16th; Chile on September 18th, and Belize on the 21st. The US Congress officialized the celebration as Hispanic Heritage Week in 1968, expanding it to a month in 1988.

In much the way our Center’s reach encompasses the Americas in a hemispheric perspective, HHM has also come to include traditions beyond Spanish cultural legacies, allowing us to critically examine that heritage and celebrate all that brings us together. Please join us in this ever-widening collaborative effort and enjoy the rich cultural expressions and insightful town hall events that start today.
