CLAS Course Development Grants

Purpose

The Center for Latin American Studies (CLAS) is pleased to announce the new CLAS Course Development Grant. These course development grants are for faculty to add to existing courses or to create new courses with Latin America, Caribbean, and/or Latinx (as well as other diasporic studies from the region) content.

Amount of Grant

Grants vary from $1,000 to $2,500 depending on the type of proposal. Funds can be used for library research, travel, student assistance or other expenses related to the substance of the course.

Types of Proposals:

  • Adding Latin America, Caribbean, and/or Latinx (and other diasporic) content to existing courses [up to $1,000]
  • Creating a 1 credit CLAS priority course related to one of the funding priorities [up to $1,500]
  • Creating a new course on Latin America, Caribbean, and/or Latinx (and other diasporic) [$2,500]

Eligibility

These grants are eligible to any faculty officially affiliated with CLAS (tenure stream and non-tenure stream).*

Funding Priorities

Grants are available to support graduate and undergraduate course development related to:

  1. Creating a new course with substantial (more than 25%) coverage of Latin America, Caribbean, and/or Latinx (and other diasporic) studies.
  2. Significantly enhancing an existing course to introduce or expand Latin America, Caribbean, and/or Latinx (and other diasporic) studies related content.
  3. Adding a component of pre-professional advising, preparation, or experience to an existing course with significant Latin American, Caribbean, and/or Latinx (and other diasporic) studies content.

CLAS is particularly interested in courses that, in whole or in part, serve one or more of the following programmatic foci:

  • Latin America/Asian connections (special focus on China)
  • Lusosphere Studies (with a strong Brazil focus and relation to the other countries in the Lusosphere)
  • Afro-Latin American
  • Afro-Latinx Studies
  • Latin American and/or Caribbean Social & Public Policy
  • Latin American and/or Caribbean Indigenous Studies
  • Latin American and/or Caribbean Environmental Studies
  • Public Health in Latin America
  • Sustainability in Latin America

Applicant Responsibility

Applying to this grant applicants will:

  • Make sure the course wll be offered within a year of being awarded the grant
  • Prepare a 1-2 page report on the course after it has been taught

  • Brief CV (10 pages maximum) in MS Word or PDF format
  • Course description (1-2 pages in MS Word or PDF format) must include:
    • Type of course:
      • Adding content to an existing course
      • Creating a 1-credit priority course
      • Creating a new course (to be offered within a year of being awarded the grant)
    • How often the course will be offered in their department
  • Statement of support from your Department Chair or School Dean
    • This should state that the course will be taught in a regular basis by the department.
  • Proposed budget
