CLAS - Travel to Professional Meetings Small Grants

Purpose

The CLAS Travel to Professional Meetings Small Grants were established to support faculty in advancing their professional development and sharing their work in Latin American, Caribbean, and Diasporic Studies (including Latinx studies) with the broader academic community. These grants provide travel funds for faculty and graduate students affiliated with the Center for Latin American Studies (CLAS) to present their research or contribute to professional meetings.


Funding Amount

Up to $800 per academic year is available to faculty and graduate students affiliated with CLAS (maximum of $800)

  • Funds are limited and awarded on a first-come, first-served basis until exhausted.

Eligibility

To qualify, faculty and graduate students must be:

  • Faculty affiliated with CLAS (contact Luis Van Fossen Bravo (bravo@pitt.edu) if you wish to become affiliated)
  • Eligibility is limited to graduate students enrolled in one of the certificate programs offered by CLAS
  • Applicants must be presenting a paper or serving as an organizer, discussant, or moderator in a session focused on the Latin American or Caribbean region

Allowable Uses of Funds

  • Airfare: Domestic airline tickets (U.S. only — international airfare is not covered)
  • Conference travel expenses: Food, lodging, and incidental expenses (per diem) related to conference participation, whether in the U.S. or abroad

Application Guidelines

  • Apply as soon as you receive confirmation of participation in a conference/meeting
  • Applications for travel taking place between September and August must be submitted no later than May 15
  • Submit documentation confirming acceptance of your paper or role in the session

Reimbursement

Funds are provided on a reimbursement basis

  • Receipts must be entered in Concur in consultation with CLAS staff
  • Reimbursement processing may take at least 10 business days
  • All receipts must be submitted within two weeks of returning from travel. Under no circumstances may submissions exceed 30 days.

Important Notes

  • Late applications (particularly those submitted near the end of the academic year) may not be funded if resources are exhausted.
  • Awards cannot be used for international airfare.
