Join us on Friday, October 9, 2020 at 4:15pm EST to discuss our featured article: Op-Ed: Using Hispanic Heritage Month as a Platform for Change written by Panoramas Intern, Stephanie Jiménez. Link to the article here: https://www.panoramas.pitt.edu/opinion-and-interviews/op-ed-using-hispan... As the University of Pittsburgh celebrates its third annual Hispanic Heritage Month, let's admire the achievements Latinx at Pitt has made with regards to raising awareness about Latinidad! However, it is easy to forget amidst the dance lessons, research symposiums, game nights, and panels that many members of the Latinx community are still left out by confusing nomenclature that ultimately erases the complexity of Latinidad. In universities, the opportunity gap and elitism continue to suppress access to equitable education and resources for Latinx students, faculty, and staff. Is HHM the platform under which Pitt can better serve its Latinx students? Stephanie Jiménez is Mexican American and was raised in Pittsburgh. They are currently pursuing a BS in environmental science and a BA in music via the global and popular music track. They are also working towards certificates in geographical information systems, Latin American studies, and sustainability. They draw on their cultural background and disciplines to forge studies on the intersections between the environment and music. Through their teaching experience at the Shuman Juvenile Detention Center (Florida Recycled), Pitt’s Center for Creativity, and the Allegheny Land Trust, they have begun exploring how science and music are tools for advocacy work. The Pitt Global Hub and the University Center for International Studies Engagement Team present "RICE & ...," a series on staple dishes from around the world shown through an educational and DIY lens. Rice is nutritious, easy to produce, transport, and prepare, resulting in a nearly worldwide staple. Indeed, rice is the main ingredient, or an important part, of culturally significant dishes and culinary routines around the globe. This series showcases diverse approaches adding locally available ingredients through the filter of cultural traditions and migration to create unique dishes, laden with history, customs, stories and flavor. In this first edition, the Center for Latin American Studies will perform two parallel, informal cooking demonstrations for all ?Rice and Beans?lovers: one will follow the traditional path to a version of rice and beans (with full kitchen resources), while the other version will be an express version that may be prepared in typical dorm room settings. The culinary orientation will be accompanied by commentary, history and anecdotes about the use of rice in the Americas, the diversity of rice dishes from all over the region, illustrating adaptations related to regional resources, cultural traditions and nutritional needs. While all of Brazil has been hit hard by COVID-19, indigenous people have been disproportionately affected. Illegal miners and other outsiders have brought the virus to isolated indigenous communities that often lack access to healthcare and other resources needed to keep the virus at bay. The government has done little in response, leading to protests by several groups. Abby Neiser will lead a roundtable discussion on the topic. You can read the article she wrote for Panoramas here - https://www.panoramas.pitt.edu/health-and-society/covid-19-presents-late... - Sandra Ley and Guillermo Trejo
The fifth Charlemos will take place on Monday, September 21, 2020 at 1:30 pm EDT. Fabrice Lehoucq (University of North Carolina, Greensboro) will moderate a discussion with Sandra Ley (CIDE) and Guillermo Trejo (University of Notre Dame) on "Votes, Drugs, and Violence: Mexico and Beyond". They will discuss their book "Votes, Drugs, and Violence: The Political Logic of Criminal Wars in Mexico" (Cambridge University Press, August 2020). See below for the book description from Cambridge University Press: One of the most surprising developments in Mexico's transition to democracy is the outbreak of criminal wars and large-scale criminal violence. Why did Mexican cartels go to war as the country transitioned away from one-party rule? And why have criminal wars proliferated as democracy has consolidated and elections have become more competitive subnationally? In Votes, Drugs, and Violence, Guillermo Trejo and Sandra Ley develop a political theory of criminal violence in weak democracies that elucidates how democratic politics and the fragmentation of power fundamentally shape cartels' incentives for war and peace. Drawing on in-depth case studies and statistical analysis spanning more than two decades of multiple levels of government, Trejo and Ley show that electoral competitiion and partisan conflict were key drivers of the outbreak of Mexico's crime wars, the intensification of violence, and the expansion of war and violence to the spheres of local politics and civil society.
