The rhythm of each Fall at Pitt makes November a time of great anticipation, where students regroup after midterms as Finals approach, but not before Thanksgiving gives a taste of the Winter Break that follows the mad dash that closes the semester.
The Center’s programming this month includes two Speaker Series presentations as well as the Thompson Memorial Lecture and a workshop by Barbara Weinstein. Our Día de los Muertos altar and ofrendas are ever more participatory, in the Global Hub at Posvar Hall and truly worth visiting. The CLAS Cinema will be screening Life + Debt, a powerful exploration of how international monetary prescriptions affected Jamaica.
Charlemos returns on November 14 (in English this time), with a discussion on undemocratic political incumbency (be sure to check out our discussion on the recent election in Brazil). Later in the day we co-sponsor Haiti Friends’ screening of Kafe Negro, a film about the impact of Haitian migration on Cuba’s coffee industry, and then, our Clube do Livro meets on November 15.
All told, despite the limited programming time available in November, we hope our offerings provide food for thought, reflection, entertainment and another reason to remain connected to CLAS.
P.S. Starting this month, we will have a weekly trivia question for a chance to win a free CLAS tote bag! More information below.
