In-person: Room 1154, Public Health;
To join the meeting on the day of the event, click "HERE"

We will be discussing how the Latinx identity includes (or not) indigenous populations. Dr. Josué López will guide us in a discussion of an article he wrote: Somos pero no somos iguales / We are but we are not the same: Unpacking Latinx indigeneity and the implications for urban schools. López, J and Irizarry, JG. same: Urban Education, 2019

Sponsored by the Center for Latin American Studies, we explore 1) the problems Latinos in small yet rapidly growing populations face, and 2) how to solve those problems. We hope to get new writing and research collaborations going! Open to all interested: students, faculty, staff, and practitioners from Pitt and beyond.  If you want to get extra network time, we will be there 30 minutes before and after the meeting time.

Next meetings in Fall 2021: Oct. 8th, Nov.  12th, and Dec. 10
Latinx and Hispanic Heritage Month Schedule

Hispanic Heritage Month (HHM) is celebrated annually from September 15-October 15 to acknowledge the history, culture, and contributions of Americans whose ancestry can be traced to over 20 countries in Latin America, including Mexico, Central and South America, and the Caribbean. In the United States, there are approximately 60 million people who have ancestries connected to these countries who reside in the United States, representing approximately 18% of the U.S. population. Many labels are used for this panethnic group, with the most common umbrella terms being “Hispanic” and “Latina/e/o/x.” Hispanic Americans have been influential in every part of this nation's history, from arts to politics to business and innovation to the military

Since 1968, HHM has been recognized by the federal government and celebrated across the United States. The start of the month, September 15th, is significant, as several Latin American countries celebrate their independence from Spain on this day, including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Mexico and Chile also celebrate their independence during the month, on September 16th and 18th respectively.

The Month is sponsored by organizations across Pitt including Latino Student Association (LSA), Hispanic Latinx Professional Association (HLPA), Latin American Graduate Organization of Students, Center for Latin American Studies, Student Affairs, University Library System, School of Education, Graduate School of Public Health, School of Social Work, Office of Admissions and Financial Aid, Small Business Development Center, and Institute for Entrepreneurial Excellence.
