Visitor Funding - Archival Research Opportunities

The European Studies Center (ESC), a Jean Monnet EU Center of Excellence (JMEUCE), in collaboration with the University Library System (ULS) at the University of Pittsburgh and the Historical Archives of the European Union (HAEU) outside of Florence, Italy, is proud to offer two unique archival fellowship opportunities. Both programs are designed to foster research on European integration and the European Union through hands-on work with archival materials. They each offer different and meaningful focuses and experiences depending on your research interests.

 

Training in Archival Opportunities: Transatlantic Pitt-Florence EU Fellowship

Funded in part by the Erasmus+ program of the European Union and the Curated Immersive Fellowships of Humanities Engage at the University of Pittsburgh, the Transatlantic Pitt-Florence EU Fellowship offers an immersive research experience that spans both Pittsburgh and Florence. This fellowship connects the Historical Archives of the European Union (HAEU) in Italy and the Archive of European Integration (AEI) at the University of Pittsburgh, supporting a broad range of projects related to European integration and the European Union.
 
Scholars from various disciplines are encouraged to apply, especially those seeking to expand their research to include European integration and EU studies. The fellowship supports projects in areas ranging from academic publications and pedagogical materials to public-facing initiatives and policy briefs. 
 
Awardees will receive funding to travel between the U.S. and Italy, where they will participate in one week of training at the HAEU in Florence, followed by up to three weeks in Pittsburgh. Fellows will also have opportunities to meet with faculty members at the University of Pittsburgh to further develop their projects.
 
Fellowship Benefits:

Eligibility:

Open to K-16 educators, pre-doctoral, post-doctoral, and senior scholars. Applicants must be able to travel between the US and Italy and are responsible for fulfilling any visa obligations. Applications from both US and non-US citizens are welcome.

Summer Scholars Research Fellowship

The Summer Scholars Research Fellowship offers an opportunity for scholars to focus on European integration or EU studies through in-depth work with the Barbara Sloan European Union Document Collection at the University of Pittsburgh. This fellowship is ideal for scholars who wish to advance their research projects using a specialized archival collection.
The fellowship supports a variety of research goals, including academic publications, policy research, and other scholarly endeavors related to European integration. The Barbara Sloan Collection, a rich resource donated by the EU Delegation in 2007, provides access to documents dating back to the 1950s, with strength in research files covering a wide range of subjects.
Fellowship Benefits:
  • Award amount: $2,000–$3,500 USD
  • 1-4 week residency in Pittsburgh
  • Access to the Barbara Sloan European Union Document Collection
  • Opportunities to meet with faculty at the University of Pittsburgh
Eligibility:
Open to pre-doctoral, post-doctoral, junior, and senior scholars. The fellowship is particularly suited for those whose research aligns with the scope of the Sloan Collection.
Note: 
Applications will be evaluated based on the suitability of materials in the Barbara Sloan European Union Document Collection to the proposed research objectives. Questions regarding the Sloan Collection should be directed to Dan Pennell, the ULS bibliographer overseeing the collection.
