Spring 2023 Paid Student Internship Opportunities

The Global Studies Center is pleased to offer Pitt students the opportunity for professional development during Spring 2023 by offering two paid internships at two local nonprofit organizations. The internship requires 10 hours per week for 15 weeks starting January 30th, 2023. Students will be expected to enroll in the Global Leadership Internship (ARTSC 1900), a 1-credit course in the Spring semester.
 
Students should send letter of intent and resume (with two references listed) to Elaine Linn at eel58@pitt.edu by January 18, 2023. 
Interviews and final selection will take place thereafter with the internship tentatively starting the week of January 30, 2023.

ARYSE supports immigrant and refugee youth in becoming engaged, confident, and celebrated members of our community. Through out-of-school-time programming that prioritizes the arts, mentorship, workforce readiness, and healing centered engagement, ARYSE youth gain the tools they need to take their place as leaders within their communities and our world.

ARYSE is working in conjunction with the Global Studies Center and University Center for International Studies at the University of Pittsburgh to host an internship for a student to gain transferable professional skills, insight into nonprofit administration, and to contribute to city-wide initiatives to make Southwestern PA a more refugee welcoming region. 
 
Interns at ARYSE will be expected to work in collaboration with the organizational staff to:
  1. Attend meetings and do research to learn about local advocacy initiatives to make Pittsburgh more welcoming and supportive to immigrant and refugee communities
  2. Coordinate with the Executive Director and members of the All for All Coalition to implement Know Your Education Rights (KYR) training modules for parents of immigrant/refugee youth
  3. Prepare materials for and attend aforementioned KYR training modules 
  4. Provide feedback on KYR training modules for continued improvement and effectiveness
 
Required & Desired Skills
  1. Students in good academic standing (3.0 Minimum GPA), available for the entirety of the internship period during the Academic Term.
  2. Proficiency in communication, organizational, and analytical skills.
  3. Experience in Microsoft Office Suite software programs, Google Docs, Google Suite, and the use of social media. Social media management knowledge would be a plus.
  4. Organization and technical/computer skills desired
  5. Comfortability and experience working with diverse groups of youth and families
  6. Cultural empathy and open-mindedness
  7. Demonstrated commitment to anti-oppression, anti-racism, and racial equity work
  8. Willingness to take ownership of responsibilities as well as a willingness to share decision-making power with others
  9. Creative and skillful in problem solving
  10. Strong desire to learn and share knowledge
  11. Available on some evenings and weekends as-needed to attend training modules
 
The internship will be remote with the exception of in-person events (if intern prefers, they can work at ARYSE’s East Liberty office.) Occasional evenings and weekend hours may be required. 

Founded in 2016 to lift up the voices of over-burdened and under-resourced residents in Pittsburgh and surrounding areas, UrbanKind Institute is a Pittsburgh-based think-and-do tank. Rooted in a commitment to equity and social justice, we bridge the gap between community experiences, public policy and academic research, bringing different people and ideas together. Our partners and clients recognize the value of our critical, people-centered racial justice perspective and the effectiveness of our community interaction and engagement strategies. In all our work, we work to eliminate barriers to families thriving in communities that are over-burdened and under-resourced. We are informed by a diverse set of experiences and a critical, interdisciplinary lens. Our work spans several areas: education, environment, health, housing, jobs, neighborhoods, public safety, and transportation.

 
This position will allow the intern to gain experience working in a local organization focused on racial, environmental, and social justice. The intern will gain exposure to many issue-based organizations and to many different groups of people from communities across our area.
 
Interns at UrbanKind Institute will be expected to work in collaboration with the organizational staff to:
  1. Support the management of the Equitable and Just Greater Pittsburgh and Black Environmental Collective networks as needed, but not limited to: 
a. Creating and maintaining documentation of network activities and progress 
b. Planning, coordinating, and executing meetings, including scheduling meetings 
c. Managing meeting logistics, agenda, and minutes 
d. Preparing materials for meetings and other activities   
e. Taking thorough notes, as assigned, at network-specific meetings  
f. Tracking meeting attendance and participation  
g. Promoting and ensuring network best-practices;
 
  1. Support the successful implementation and management of other UrbanKind projects, as needed;
  2. Attend partner and community meetings with UrbanKind staff, as relevant to the intern’s interests or UrbanKind’s needs.
 
Required & Desired Skills
  1. Students in good academic standing (3.0 Minimum GPA), available for the entirety of the internship period during the Academic Term. 
  2. Proficiency in communication, organizational, and analytical skills.
  3. Experience in Microsoft Office Suite software programs, Google Docs, Google Suite, and the use of social media. Social media management knowledge would be a plus. 
  4. Organization and technical/ computer skills desired
  5. Multitask in a fast-paced, team environment under direct supervision but also thrive as a self-starter. 
  6. Preference enrolled in a UCIS certificate
