CLAS@Pitt Monthly Calendar/October 2021

CLAS@Pitt Monthly Calendar/October 2021

It is hard to believe that the midpoint in the semester is nearly upon us already. Though the academic calendar started with great expectations and hopes for what was to come, uncertainty was the underlying tone. Meanwhile, Pitt has achieved aggregate COVID vaccination rates above 90% throughout its campuses across Pennsylvania. A sense of productive routine and predictability seems to reverberate, including the enthusiasm of students, faculty, and staff coming together for in-person classes, activities, and events.

While we are privileged and recognize and appreciate this, we must not let our guard down - this pandemic has resulted in losses and tragedy elsewhere in the U.S., the hemisphere, and the world touching most of us one way or another.

On the other hand, we are hopeful of what is ahead and aim to keep you interested and involved in our work and the opportunities we might facilitate for you. All our events are still available virtually, but this October highlights include the return of some significant in-person activities, including the Panoramas Roundtables (Friday, Oct 1 at 3:15) and a limited Latin American and Caribbean Festival celebration for our students, faculty, and staff on Saturday, October 2, 7-10 PM at the William Pitt Union.

Next week we also celebrate International Week and will host Rosalynne Montoya as part of our “What’s in a Name?” series (What’s in a Name?: Legal Names and the LGBTQIA+ Experience with Rosalynne Montoya), and we will have Prof. Jerome Branche as a discussant for the first film our CLAS Cinema series, Stateless, on October 7 (6:00 pm). We have also supported and organized events for this year’s Latinx and Hispanic Heritage Month celebration and Latinx Connect Conference, including (Policy & Advocacy Panel: Current LatinX Affairs in Pennsylvania as well as the Performing Afrolatinidad: The Arts, Identity, and Social Justice and Latinx panel). Both are especially timely in light of preliminary census results showing important demographic changes in the region.

All told, this highlights the importance of the community work we have engaged in for decades, cementing the Center’s relevance and collaboration with multiple Community-Based Organizations, municipal governments, and institutions.  As always, let us know about your ideas and suggestions, especially as we try out small but important changes in how we run events and the way our CLAS and our Panoramas Web pages look and function.

Latin American Film for the Month of October:

Stateless

Screening on October 7th,2021 at 6pm
Director Michèle Stephenson’s new documentary Stateless traces the complex tributaries of history and present-day politics, as state-sanctioned racism seeps into mundane offices, living room meetings, and street protests. At a time when extremist ideologies are gaining momentum in the U.S. and around the world, STATELESS is a warning of what can happen in a society when racism runs rampant in the government.
