Even as we celebrate the second part of Latinx and Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 – October 15), we have a full month of opportunities to join CLAS events. Below, some of the highlights for October:
We start the month with a great presentation by Dr. Nicola Foote, Dean of the Honors College, for our CLAS Speaker Series on British Caribbean Migration to the Galapagos Islands, on Thursday, October 6. The next day, on Friday, October 7, we celebrate Dr. Barry Ames, Political Science Andrew Mellon Professor for his impactful and illustrious career on Friday.
On October 14 and 15 we host the Plantation Societies in Comparative Perspective Conference, part of an ongoing joint effort from the Working Group on Comparative Slavery, including institutions from the hemisphere. On October 15 we will celebrate our 40th Annual Latin American and Caribbean Festival, an event that brings myriad performers, cuisines and a broad representation of the regional Latinx, Caribbean, Hispanic and Latin American communities.
Our CLAS Cinema film series continues on October 22, with Canción Sin Nombre, a highly regarded and awarded Peruvian film from 2019, as does our Speaker Series, with Mariana Muaze, visiting us from Brazil. Considering the upcoming second round of the Brazilian Elections, you may want to also look at the most recent Charlemos event on the topic. At the end of the month Pitt will host the second Latinx Connect Conference, Elevating Latinx identities and Contemporary Issues on October 27-29, and then Dia de los Muertos in November.
In short, we have an exciting month with even more in store. We hope to see you, in person, soon.
