Post-industrial cities are crucibles of reinvention and innovation. Those that have successfully navigated the sunsetting of industrial production have creatively reoriented to intellectual technology, advanced manufacturing, business services, and life science innovations. And yet, the challenges that followed industrial decline—loss of population, unemployment, and destructive urban redevelopment strategies—continue to reverberate.

As one of the signature events for the Year of Engagement at Pitt, Newcastle University and the University of Pittsburgh are hosting a two-day virtual conference on the role universities play in building sustainable, just, and inclusive cities. The goal of the conference is to both define what the place-based agenda is and to think systematically through the advantages of an international network that is focused on post-industrial cities. Through various plenary sessions and concurrent panels, we invite you to explore research connections and moments of intersection in our current civic engagement, but also think through the value of global partnerships to inform future efforts in this domain.

All events are open to the public. Registration is required.
