International Career Toolkits Events for Spring 2017

 

January 13: Careers in Diplomacy and in the Foreign Service

3:00-4:30pm, 4217 Posvar Hall

Interested in becoming a Foreign Service Officer at the US Department of State? Passionate about diplomacy and international relations? Come and hear from Dr. Kenneth Chern about life in diplomacy and how to join the foreign service!!

Dr. Kenneth Chern taught U.S.-East Asian history for ten years at the University of Hong Kong before serving for 27 years as a U.S. Foreign Service Officer. His last two diplomatic assignments were as Deputy Consul General in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam and as Consul General in Perth, Australia. More recently, Ken has served as Professor of Asian Policy at Swinburne University in Melbourne, Australia and as founding Executive Director of the Swinburne Leadership Institute. He is currently an Adjunct Professor at Swinburne, and is Contract Course Coordinator at the U.S. Department of State’s Foreign Service Institute, designing and teaching courses in East Asian and Pacific Area Studies. He holds a Ph.D. in history from the University of Chicago.

March 17: Careers in Global Public Health

Interested in global public health issues? Join us as we hear from Sarah Angel Markwardt and Miriam (Mimi) Frisch from Magee Womancare International and Partners in Health respectively.  

Sarah currently works at Magee Womancare International where she coordinates women's health outreach for refugee, immigrant, and under-served communities in the Pittsburgh area. Newer to the field of public health, Sarah previously worked as an International Admissions Counselor at the University of Pittsburgh where she traveled extensively. Sarah began the first 8 years of her career working in various capacties for Hekima Place Girl's Home in Kiserian, Kenya. Because of these experiences, she is very passionate about women's rights, especially regarding health and education.

Miriam (Mimi) Frisch is originally from Buffalo, New York. Mimi graduated from University of Pittsburgh in 2015 with a Bachelors of Philosophy in International and Area Studies focused on global health and urban studies with a minor in economics. Her thesis focused on socio-demographic risk factors on dengue fever incidence in Buenos Aires. Previously, Mimi spent one year working in Rwanda as a Global Health Corps fellow, where she worked for the Rwandan Ministry of Health as the Nutrition Program Monitoring and Evaluation Officer in Burera District. She provided programmatic support to the Burera District nutrition program, and analyzed all nutrition data for the district, providing feedback and guidelines to health centers to improve nutrition education and malnutrition monitoring. Her work was recognized by UNICEF and was presented as a potential model for implementation across Rwanda. Currently, Mimi works for Partners in Health in Liberia, as the Staff Operations Officer in Maryland County, where she is responsible for building and managing systems and staff to improve efficiency and delivery of operational services of the organization. In her free time, Mimi enjoys traveling, cooking, eating and running. 

 

International Career Toolkits Events for Fall 2016

 

September 15: Careers in International Development and Education Policy with Lindsay Randall, Regional Manager at More Than Me

Lindsay Randall is a cultural anthropologist with ample experience in non-profit and NGO management focusing on education initiatives. She earned her BA in International Relations and French magna cum laude in 2011 from Boston University and her MSc with distinction in Social Anthropology in 2015 from The University of Edinburgh. At Boston University, she obtained a certificate in International Development at the University Abdou Moumouni in Niamey, Niger. Her professional career has included work with Cultural Survival where she worked on Native American indigenous language education revitalization campaigns, and work with the strategy and operations of regional offices for Teach For America. Lindsay serves on the Board of Directors of a small non-profit, Friends of Niger, as the Projects Committee Chairperson where she evaluates and recommends project proposals for funding. She is currently based in Monrovia, Liberia working for an American-Liberian NGO, More Than Me, where she manages the organization’s partnership with the Government of Liberia’s Partnership Schools For Liberia initiative by taking More Than Me’s services to six public schools across the country.

 

September 30: Round Table Conversations with Experts from the Field: Education, Health and Medicine

with Mrs Victoria Nalongo – Bright Kids Uganda,  Dr. Mark Karnes – Sodo Christian Hospital, Ethiopia,  Mrs. Alison Karnes – WRAPS, Washable Reusable Affordable Pads, Ethiopia

These experts will share their entrepreneurial field experiences working with populations in East Africa to provide education, shelter, healthcare and other basic social services. Students will have the opportunity to meet with them, hear their stories, ask questions, and learn about opportunities to get involved.

 

October 21: Careers in Human Rights/Social Justice with Dr. Ellen Dorsey, Executive Director at the Wallace Global Fund

Interested in human rights and social justice issues?  Come join us for another event under the International Career Toolkit Series: Careers in Human Rights/Social Justice!!!  We will be talking to and hearing from Dr. Ellen Dorsey from the Wallace Global Fund.

Dr. Ellen Dorsey is the Executive Director of the Wallace Global Fund.  She has a PhD in Political Science from the University of Pittsburgh and previously worked for Amnesty International, chairing its US Board of Directors.  In addition, she served on the board of non-profit organizations including the US Human Rights Network, Global Initiative on Economic and Social Rights, and Shared Interest.  She also worked as the Executive Director of the Rachel Carson Institute , Associate Professor at Chatham University, and lectured and written extensively in books and journals.

 

November 18: Opportunities Home and Abroad after Graduation

Please join us to discuss your options with alums from the Peace Corps, English Program in Korea (EPIK), Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Programme,  Americorps, Teach for America, and the Fulbright Scholarship Program.   

 

December 2: Careers in the Navy and in Intelligence

Are you interested in government or intelligence work?  Then join us in speaking with NC1 Kittell and ENS Bruskin in understanding the application process for entry into the US Navy's Officer Candidate School.  This event will provide information for those who are interested in doing any form of government or intelligence work right after graduation.

Meet and greet with Eric Shiner, director of The Andy Warhol Museum, and Pitt alum (BPhil, History of Art and Architecture & Japanese '94). After the meeting with Mr. Shiner, we'll have time to tour the museum. Transportation provided.

Students selected for the International Career Toolkit Series tript o Washington D.C. are required to attend a one-hour session on creating a 30-second elevator speech. This is an important skill to develop and will be utilized during the trip.  This session is for those who could not attend the first session.

 

February 26: International Law Lecture and Career Talk with Cody Corliss, Associate Legal Officer for the United Nations

Cody Corlissis a war crimes prosecutor at the United Nations International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) where he is part of trial team prosecuting Bosnian Serb General Ratko Mladic on charges of genocide, crimes against humanity, and violations of the laws and customs of war. Mr. Corliss is an expert on international truth commissions and his work has appeared in magazines, newspapers, and legal journals throughout the United States. As a Rotary Scholar in the Netherlands, he researched the European integration of immigrants from majority-Muslim nations, with a particular focus on Dutch integration policies. Before joining the United Nations, Mr. Corliss practiced law in Pittsburgh with the international law firm K&L Gates, worked as a political consultant, and was a television news reporter. A native of West Virginia, he has degrees from Harvard, Universiteit Leiden, and Cornell.

 

Thursday, February 25 – Friday, February 26: International Career Toolkit Series:  Washington, D.C. Trip 

The Asian Studies Center, African Studies Program, the Center for Russian and East European Studies, and Global Studies Center are partnering to provide an exciting career development opportunity for student enrolled in one of the four programs and for students enrolled in the Global Studies Living Learning Community.  Students will travel to Washington, D.C. to meet with experts and alumni in various fields to learn about different career tracks, network with alumni, and gain an inside perspective on the different organizations in Washington D.C.
